High School Prom DJ, DJ Charles: Crestview High 2017

It’s crazy to think but we’ve been working with Crestview High School for 9 years now.  When B-Boy Productions, Inc decided to add High School Prom DJ services to our repertoire in the Florida Panhandle, they were our very first one. This year’s Prom 2017 dance was held at the Destin Community Center. We had our resident school dance DJ, Charles, there to rock it out while our sister company, B-Boy Rentals and Event Design, handled the lighting. The dance floor immediately filled once “Passionfruit” was played early on. One other big notable track of the night was “Peek A Boo” by Lil Yachty. For the complete playlist, see below.

Emerald Coast Top Salon 2017 Fashion Event | #bboygivesback

We’ve been involved with the Emerald Coast Top Salon event since its inception back in 2011. I (Brian B), personally, feel honored to have DJ’d 3 out of the 6 events (including the last 2 consecutive years). It’s a unique event in that they select a handful of local salons to participate and “battle” one another. Each salon has a charity they are supporting. The Emerald Coast Top Salon 2017 battle is fairly simple: Take one person (of the salon’s choosing) and do a complete make-up (hair, make-up, clothing, etc.). The winning salon’s charity is awarded a substantial cash donation.

The 2017 event was held at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa in the Emerald Ballroom on April 7, 2017. Over 600 people were in attendance to see 14 salons battle it out and see their models walk the runway. Pure and Couture Salon won “Fan Favorite”, Southern Roots Salon and Spa won the “Judges’ Pick award” and the grand prize, the 2017 “Top Salon” was Avantgarde Salon Spa. This was Avantgarde 4th time winning the event and 2nd consecutive win. Their benefiting charity was Others of Destin, Inc.

Emerald Coast Top Salon 2017

Runway tracks were as follows:

  • Volume One Salon: “Get Me Bodied” by Beyonce
  • Traveling Chic: “Confident” by Demi Lovato
  • The Posh Daisy Salon Spa: “Live Like You Are Loved” by Hawk Nelson
  • The Kat House Hair Studio: “Pound The Alarm” by Nicki Minaj
  • The Cutting Room Salon and Spa: “Vivrant Thing” by Q-Tip
  • Spa Lala Day Spa and Salon: “Layla” by Eric Clapton
  • Southern Roots Salon and Spa: “American Woman” by The Guess Who
  • Serenity by the Sea Spa: “Me Too” by Meghan Trainor
  • Pure & Couture Salon: “Something Just Like This (Vanity X Kevin Peels Remix)” – The Chainsmokers & Coldplay
  • project:STYLE salon: “U Got the Look” by Prince
  • Lux Solis Aveda Salon & Spa: “Girl On Fire” by Alicia Keys
  • La Renaissance Salon: “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake
  • Avantgarde Salon Spa: “24K” by Bruno Mars
  • As You Like It Salon and Spa: “Finally (Roman Hunter Remix)” by CeCe Peniston

DJ Brian B spun the pre-event music setting a high-energy tone with an open format.  There were 4 intermissions between the 14 salons that became “booty breaks” with attendees jumping on to the catwalk and dancing it up.

This was by far the most successful showcase in this event’s six year history.  Looking forward to including this event in our 2018 #bboygivesback plans.

New B-Boy Entertainment Option: DJ Furniture

For years, it bothered us. Couples would be spend good money on flowers, linens and other decor items to have a certain aesthetic for the wedding of their dreams.  Then, here we come as the DJ and we’re presented with a 6′ banquet table to set our gear on.  We did our best to mask our cables and gear with a “facade” to present a polished and clean appearance and from the guest point of view, it looked pretty clean but there wasn’t a wow factor.

It also felt much like a kid who hides all their toys under their bed when they know their parents are coming in to do a room inspection or an adult who throws all their clutter in the closet when guests come over. It may appear you’ve pulled one over on them, but inside you know it’s not how you want it to be.  This was the picture (below) that sealed the deal for us that we needed to be better. Making a clean and professional work station is part of what we constantly strive for so now we’ve added it as a New B-Boy Entertainment Option.

New B-Boy Entertainment Option:

The photographer took a picture from our angle of our entertainers and while we love the excitement and look of both of them, we could NEVER use this picture in any of our marketing because it just didn’t sit well with us. It looked messy. Again, the client and guests couldn’t see it from their vantage point but we could. Bottom line, our clients deserved better.

We worked with some designers on some DJ specific furniture to really take our presentation to the next level.  We’ve put together a promo video to showcase it off to you.

Currently, these pieces are only available in our Florida and NYC locations (sorry CA clients). If you’re interesting in ordering a piece for your event, contact us today.  They are in limited supply and booked on a first come, first serve basis.  In our Florida market, we are the only company who offers this.  Have your event stand out from the rest!

Bboy Gives Back for Autism ECAC Golf Tourney | #bboygivesback

Did you know that April is National Autism Awareness month? We felt like this was a perfect time to call attention to one of our #bboygivesback non-profit partners, Emerald Coast Autism Center (ECAC). The staff at ECAC have a big job on their hands. Studies indicate that 1 in 68 children in the United States can be diagnosed as having autism spectrum disorder. These children will face innumerable challenges in life that many of us will never fully understand. But the good people at ECAC have put themselves on the frontline to face these challenges right alongside the youngsters they affect. It takes guts. It takes resolve. It takes a big heart. And it takes having a lot of support.

Bboy Gives Back for Autism and honored to do so…

That’s why B-Boy Productions was honored to play a role in the 5th Annual “Hole in ONE” Golf Tournament. The “ONE” in the event’s title is inspired by the “1 in 68” statistic, as a reminder of what — or rather, who — this charity fundraiser is aiming to help. Held at the prestigious Blackstone Golf Course in DeFuniak Springs, FL, the tournament raised funds for ECAC’s Capital Campaign, funding their newly-built facility on the Northwest Florida State College campus in Niceville, FL. This new state-of-the-art therapy center provides ECAC the opportunity to accommodate more students, and to offer them each a better, more effective therapy experience, while also ensuring a more substantial future for the center itself.

Golfers from all over the area, both seasoned and — not so seasoned, came out to support the cause. B-Boy Productions was there, with DJ Josh B. providing audio support and MC duties for the “shot gun start” opening ceremony and announcements. Hours later, as players returned from their rounds to the clubhouse, DJ Josh was there to provide music for the after party. He bolstered the tournament’s award presentations with a soundtrack of victory tunes, and kept a lively mix going throughout the many raffle giveaways.

DJ Josh B #bboygivesback

We also brought some of our B-Boy team to participate as golfers in the tournament. It was obvious by the end of the day that none of our team will be pursuing a golf career.  Our sweet spot is behind the decks and rocking parties. That said, it was a great time for some of our DJs to hang outside of the office and get to know some of the ECAC staff, partners and donors.

We’re School Dance DJs Too | Meigs Middle School Dance With DJ Charles

While wedding season is in full gear, we’re also on the cusp of School Dance season. We don’t write about it often enough, but we are definitely school dance DJs as well as wedding DJs. Prom season starts in a bit and DJ Charles is the best DJ on the Emerald Coast when it comes to school dances. He knows exactly how to rock the crowd but still keep everything kosher for the faculty and dance chaperones.

school dance DJs

This past week, we sent Charles and 2 party motivators to Meigs Middle School in Shalimar, FL for a dance that helps to raise funds for the 8th grade appreciation day at the end of the year. The dance was held in the school’s cafeteria. There were about 100 students in attendance and the event was hype from the first song.

We had two of our party motivators/ MCs in training work with Charles. They were out there leading line dances and dancing with the kids all night long. For these kind of dances, this helps take the event to another level. The song of the night was “iSpy” by Kyle feat. Lil Yacty.

We got an amazing review within about 30 minutes of the dance ending by the one of the school dance advisors. Thanks again for having us Meigs and we look forward to working with you again soon.

UWF Dance Marathon | #bboygivesback

Sometimes we come across non-profits that just seem to fall in our laps as perfect fits for our #bboygivesback initiative. The UWF Dance Marathon is one of them. Of course, it helps that one of our DJs attends UWF (University of West Florida).

Dance Marathon DJ

Never heard of a Dance Marathon? Colleges across the country have been doing these for years. It is a yearlong philanthropy effort that raises funds for the Children’s Miracle Network. The UWF Dance Marathon, in particular, raises funds through that organization for a local hospital, the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola. DJ Josh Weck saw a great opportunity for us to do what we do – throw down fantastic music with polished MC’ing. This effort is in its second year at UWF. The first year UWF used a spotify playlist for the entertainment. With a live DJ/MC, this would be a completely different experience for them (in a good way). Josh was up to the 8 hour DJ’ing challenge for the signature event. Students danced from 10:00AM until 8:00PM. Not all danced the entire 8 hours (most came in waves through the 8 hours), but a few did. To keep it from getting stagnant, certain hours were themed by genre or style.

The results? Last year they raised $11,000 and this year they raised over $43,000! Boom!

Interested in being a part of the Dance Marathon? Anyone can get involved – whether it is donating, being on the Executive board, or being a dancer. Follow them on Instagram to learn more. Also, if you are interested in volunteering with the local hospital they do accept volunteers there as well.

Here’s what 2 administrators had to say about our involvement on our 3rd party review site.

DJ Brian B Partners With The Birthday Party Project

I heard about The Birthday Party Project and I knew they would be a major player in our #bboygivesback initiative. As the owner/operator of B-Boy Productions, it was important that I lead the charge of our #bboygivesback initiative. For years, I had looked for a non-profit partner that was a perfect fit for B-Boy. In the interim, we did plenty of non-profit events and were glad to be a part of them (still are). However, last year, we found one of those perfect fits. I heard about The Birthday Party Project and I knew they would be a major player in our #bboygivesback initiative. It’s a party themed organization! I mean, could it be any more in our wheelhouse as an entertainment company?

Birthday party project New York

I believe the statistic was 80% of kids in a homeless family shelter never celebrate a birthday. When I heard that, my heart broke for those children. Not one birthday party? We can’t have that. I immediately made a call to see how we could get involved. Late last year I volunteered to be a part of what was already in place before making suggestions on what else could be done with my event niche. The party was all I thought it would be and more.

So what is the The Birthday Party Project (TBPP) and how does it work? Originating out of Dallas, this non-profit is 5 years old and growing rapidly. They are now in multiple major cities and adding more all the time. They partner with a few homeless family shelters in each city. Every month they work with some of the best in the event business world who donate their time and talents. The theme of the party changes each month. The one I went to last year was a carnival themed party. Papa John’s donates pizza for all the kids. Ceci New York handles the invitations and then many volunteers come and run the games and activities for 2 hours. If it is a child’s birthday that month, TBPP gets the inside scoop on what that child likes. From monetary donations received in, they provide a big gift or two to each child whose birthday falls in that month. Goody bags go out to all of the other kids in attendance so no one leaves empty-handed. Of course, there’s a birthday cake and cupcakes as well!

This month’s theme was “Dance Party”. Clearly, there was a need for a DJ. With 3 shelters in NYC, I was able to volunteer for 2 of the 3 dates and put my DJ skill set to use. It was an absolute blast. Glow in the dark necklaces and glow wands as well as cool shades, a photo booth station and fantastic music made the party! I hope to share my experience with other DJ colleagues of mine as well as other event professionals and add to the amazing work that TBPP is already doing.

Palate & Palette | #BBOYGIVESBACK

Our #bboygivesback has kicked off with a flurry in 2017 and shows no signs of slowing down. We had an opportunity to once again work with Shelter House – this time for their Palate and Palette Event which took place at the Tack Room at Arnett’s Gulfside Ranch in Santa Rosa Beach. It included a five course dinner along with a live painting during the event. The musical soundtrack for the evening was live mixed by our own DJ Charles.

Palate & Palette Shelter House

The featured chefs were Nikhil Abuvala of Roux 30A, Tim Creehan of Cuvee 30A and Destin Ice Market 30A, John Engle of The Gulf Okaloosa Island, Jack McGuckin of Bijoux and Dan Pettis of Fuel Restaurant and One20: A Modern Bistro. Each of them contributed one course to the meal. Krutz Family Cellars of Sonoma County, California paired each course with wines.

The featured artist, Jon Moody, is based out of New Orleans and his work has been seen on the hit television show “Empire” as well as recognized by the White House. He created a piece of art during the dinner which then was auctioned off following the dinner by Chris Camp of Luxury Estates Auction Company. The winning bid was for $4,500. This inaugural signature event brought in just short of $18,000.

Musically, DJ Charles stuck with an urban chic city vibe. The playlist included songs like “Cherry Wine” by Nas & Amy Winehouse and selections from a few different albums: “Bright Moments” from Flamingosis and “Chasing The Golden Hour” from GRiZ. DJ Charles commented, “This wasn’t a dancing event but the music was crucial to its success. I went with a very groovy cocktail music style to start and would switch things up from course to course to keep the vibe fun, upbeat, and people wondering what was coming next.”

Giving Back Initiative | Fun at Shelter House’s Brunch and Bowl

As part of B-Boy Productions’ #bboygivesback initiative, we are partnering with Shelter House, a domestic and sexual violence center, for many events in 2017. Our first Giving Back Initiative event of the year with them was their inaugural “Brunch and Bowl” event held this past January. This particular event raised more than $6,000. DJ Shawn Frady spun music for this event as those who attended enjoyed a fabulous brunch, unlimited bowling, a silent auction and of course, amazing music! It was held at Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill located at the Destin Commons in Destin, FL.

The bowling was a fun-filled competition featuring some of law enforcement’s finest from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and the OCSO Sheriff’s office as well as Century 21 Blue Marlin, ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, Paul Hughes Family Foundation, Wine and Wenches, Vieno Investments Agency (VI-A), Wesley McGrail & Wesley and RLI.

DJ for the event and General Manager of B-Boy Florida’s Division, Shawn Frady, commented, “A hearty brunch, bowling, music and raising money for a fantastic non-profit organization. I’d say that’s a great way to spend a Saturday morning.”

Company Holiday Parties | Ideas for Throwing a Memorable Holiday Party

As we move into the holiday season,  we’re pumped up at B-Boy Productions!  Part of it is just because there is a genuine shift in the atmosphere.  People tend to get excited as we move into a time of family get-togethers and reflection on the past year.  New holiday music albums are released, Starbucks holiday drinks and….holiday parties are thrown!

Throwing a Memorable Holiday Party

We’ve seen a resurgence of company holiday parties over the last few years which is a good thing.  Why should these parties matter and why should companies do them?  Here’s our top 3 reasons:

*IT SENDS A MESSAGE TO EMPLOYEES…that you, as a company, care.  With the economy being erratic at times over the years, this gives employees a feeling that things are  OK in their company world.  It also shows that the company is willing to spend money, which could otherwise pad the company’s bottom line, to lift company morale.

*IT ALLOWS EMPLOYEES TO LET THEIR GUARD DOWN…and just be them.  It is t a great way to see how down to earth everyone is OUTSIDE the office.  This also has been known to create bonding moments among employees alike.  We hear these types of comments all the time in our holiday party debriefs with clients.

*IT’S HEALTHY TO CELEBRATE…how the year went.  If it was a good, it’s easy to do.  But even if it is a down year, there is still victory in what was learned through it.  Management can use it as an opportunity to encourage employees to look foward to the following year.  But most of all, it always good to celebrate your team.

With all that said, we don’t take these events lightly.  We try to create an atmosphere that adds to those things and make the event one to remember.  So what are some of our ideas to make these events stand out?  Glad you asked!

*PROGRAM THE NIGHT LIKE YOU WOULD A PRODUCTION!  This might seem silly at first but there’s a ton of truth in this.  You want the night to have ebb and flow, encouraging guests to stay throughout the entire event.  There is no “formula” or websites dedicated to holiday parties (like The Knot or Wedding which help wedding couples) so this is where we come in.  Just a few examples of ways we try to keep it flowing:
– Don’t do all your raffles in the beginning or at end of the night
– Come up with creative ways to entertain during dinner (we have a ton of these things in our arsenal)
– Holiday entertainment should be more than just Holiday music

*ADD A PHOTO BOOTH!  This is the perfect complement to your main entertainment.  You can utilize this as guests arrive, during dinner and/or while the dancing is going on.  The print-outs also make a great party favor for your guests to take home. Talk about letting loose and breaking down barriers; nothing does that quite like a photo booth.  In our case, we have two types of booth styles and we also give you all the photos on a jump drive to use as you wish (blackmail possibly? ha!).

*ADD KARAOKE!  This can definitely take your party to another level. It also can get people out of their shell pretty quickly.  We’ve done “battle of the departments”, “women vs men”, and various other types of karaoke party competitions.  You also may find some hidden talent within your company (and some amazing YouTube material to post).  If you’ve never had this at your party, you don’t know what you’re missing!

*THE RAFFLE MUSIC!  If you’re not careful, the raffles can suck all the energy out of the room (accomplishing the exact opposite of what you’d think would happen). Why?  Because there is no musical help here.  The average DJ just waits until this portion is over and then resumes with the holiday or dancing music.  In some cases, the raffle can take 15-20 minutes.  Talk about a buzz kill (pun intended).  We utilize “audio stingers” during each raffle pull and as winners make their way to the stages.  These are short 10-20 second pre-produced clips of songs (typically the hook) like Dancing Queen, Respect, Movin’ On Up, Jeopardy Theme, Sexy and I Know It,  Roar, etc. and we play off the vibe of prizes being raffled and those who win them.  We have about 100-200 of these ready to go and we can fire them at any time.

*WALKING MUSIC!  At most company holiday parties, the CEO or someone on the management team gives a few words either as a welcome or in the middle of the night.  This is a great opportunity to honor him or her with some “walking music” as they make their way to the stage.  Think about the Oscars.  There’s always walking music as speakers make their way to the stage.  The song choice can range from comical (Rocky Theme, Superman Theme, I’m Too Sexy, etc.) to serious (instrumental music).

*GAMES & SKITS!  I know what you’re thinking…these will be CHEESY!  Well, surprise, the ones we do are not.  These can run the gamut as we’re constantly adding new and fresh games and skits to the mix.  Everything from “Holiday Trivia” to “Celebrity Sightings” to “Build A Snowman” to “Name that Guitar Riff” – this is just a small snippet of what we can do.

At the end of the day, our goal is to have company employees be able to forget what’s happening in their world with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and just enjoy one another for the few hours we’re there.  If we do it right, we’ll have helped create moments that will be talked about for years to come.   Let us help you do that.  Contact us for availability.
